Hi Sir Kim, kindly tell us a little bit about you..
Hello Im Kim Ian Marl A. Surmela, 23 years old, currently teaching MAPEH at Esperanza National High School in Koronadal City.
If you could live anywhere on this awesome planet, where would you build your dream home?
Japan… since then I was an avid fan of watching Japanese anime, through that kind of hobby I learn some ideas about their culture as well as their norms and values.
What sort of work (photography) do you specialize in?
Portrait photography.
Did you go to school to study photography?
No, I learned it on my own through reading, watching tutorial videos and also attending seminars and workshops.
How long have you been a photographer?
Almost 2 and a half year
What or who got you started in photography?
My uncle influenced me to do photography.. he is a fashion photographer in Norway.
How would you describe your style (photography)?
Field of exploration. I explore and do not stick to photography techniques or rules. I love experimenting.
The place you love the most in SOX and Why?
Tboli in South Cotabato. It is where I can experience the true adventure and native living
What type of cameras do you shoot with?
Canon (eos 60D)
What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
Speedlite with Trigger (I love playing portraits with lightings)
Can you describe how and when you use flash, video light, reflectors and natural light during a shoot?
Definitely when there is limited light available or there is no light at all… usually it occur when I shoot in a dark room, night shoot or indoor shoot
How important is Photoshop in your final images?
If am going to rate it 6/10…. I don’t usually fully manipulating the image just minor enhancement but it depends on the shots.
How do you feel about cropping an image?
For me, cropping an image don’t make a good photographer. It only means you didn’t shot in the right distance and angle. But it still depends on the situation.
What gives you ideas and inspires you to create such great imagery?
The root of all my crafts are based from the word APPRECIATION, when people recognized my craft it pays me back and it motivates me.
What has been your most memorable experience as photographer and why?
When we conducted an outreach program with SOX team, it felt like we are not just photographers that captures life, we also touched others lives.
Where would be your dream destination to shoot?
Paris, France
What is your favorite image you have shot recently? Can you describe its creation in regards to location, lighting, composition etc., also your thoughts when creating the image and what it means to you?
Is there anybody or anything you would love to photograph?
New born babies who sleeps. I love baby photography.
What advice do you have for somebody who wants to pursue photography?
Photography is not all about having good and expensive equipments.. creativity, patience, time and effort are the main ingredients.
If you could be invisible for one day with your camera...
I'll go out to the street, market, park and take perfect stolen shots

First thing you would do if you won the lotto?
Give free dinner to all street children for 3 months
What photographic ambitions have you not yet achieved?
To have my works published on a book with my name on it.

When I shoot fifty shade of grey inspired portraits. I love the results, it tells a story about feminism, at some point women can be fatal.
The last workshop or seminar you attended and why?
Erich Caparas Workshop in Cebu and Canon Seminar Workshop in General Santos…I really admire the photos of Erich Caparas because of its details.

I would be Kim Ian Marl A. Surmela Ph.D five years from now travelling Asian countries while doing photography.
